Yan Huili, Associate Researcher at the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has long been engaged in research on the genetic regulation and germplasm innovation of crop stress responses to ion toxicity. By integrating multidisciplinary approaches from plant genetics, molecular biology, and environmental science, she has systematically elucidated the molecular genetic mechanisms underlying the differential cadmium (Cd) accumulation capacity between indica and japonica rice. She has established a low-Cd rice breeding technology system that combines low-Cd haplotypes stacking with genome-wide selection, and proposed a "molecular early warning—variety adaptation—soil threshold" strategy for the safe utilization of heavy metal-contaminated paddy fields. Her work has also systematically deciphered the molecular mechanisms by which the arsenic hyperaccumulator fern Pteris vittata absorbs and translocates arsenic, creating a novel arsenic-remediation rice variety that offers a new avenue for phytoremediation of arsenic-contaminated soils. Additionally, she has developed a series of salt-tolerant and alkali-tolerant Panicum miliaceum varieties that demonstrate significant yield advantages in moderately to severely saline-alkali soils, providing germplasm support for the efficient utilization of such lands. These achievements have laid a theoretical foundation for addressing the challenge of "blocking stress ion toxicity while enhancing soil productivity," contributing scientific and technological support to the sustainable utilization of degraded soils and the safeguarding of national food security in China. Based on these research outcomes, she has published 12 papers as first (including co-first) author and corresponding author in journals such as Nature Communications, New Phytologist, and Journal of Hazardous Materials, making active contributions to the efficient utilization of degraded arable land. She has also led and participated in multiple scientific research projects. |
